Lochnell 2025

To Benderloch today for the Lochnell Intermediate Championship. Eight top young professionals will be vying for the sought after award.

They are Douglas Baird, Kyle Cameron, Thomas Fallon, Malachi Johannsen, Chris McCartan, Liam Nicolson, Andrew Pattison and Magnus Stone.

They play a piobaireachd and a march, strathspey and reel, the title going to the overall winner. Four tunes of each have been submitted. The Judges are Angus D MacColl, Jack Taylor and myself.

Fear and Tigh Iain Hurst; 2026 Championship Judges are Dr Jack; Stewards: Christine Hill, Margaret Farmer. Committee: Lord Cochrane, John Campbell of Kilberry, Torquil Telfer, Hattie Mellor, Jamie Mellor.

This Under-22 Championship is a significant initiative by the Argyllshire Gathering Trust and the event’s main sponsor Dungallan Country House. Lochnell is the ideal stepping-stone for young champions looking to climb the ranks.

Previous winners include Cameron May, Brodie Watson-Massey and Ruairidh Brown who have all gone on to senior success.

  • Also on tomorrow is the National Mod piping. Events are at the McPhater Piping Centre in Glasgow and Glasgow Caledonian University (juniors).

European Knock-Out
Eric Stein: The EKO / European Knockout will take place on November 28th, 6-8pm, Irish Pub Kolbenz, Kolbenz, Germany.
Admission free. Top amateur players will compete with a medley of their choice. 

The pipers are: Ryan Hicks (France), Kian Johnston (Germany), Raúl Peinado (Spain), Garry Stevenson (Ireland), Andrew Robertson (Scotland). 

We are not charging for tickets. We are tagging on to another piping event that takes place latter that evening. There may be a few more entries to come. Adjudicator: Kyle Rothschild-USA.

Piobaireachd Society: The Society’s celebrated website will be off air for a few hours this evening for upgrading work and maintenance. The downtime begins circa 4pm BST and the work should take no more than a couple of hours.

Our new server will allow for faster uploads/ downloads and greater scope for development and refinement. The Society’s 1,000+ members have been notified individually.


BB Band: John Shone has sent this picture of his old 5th Croydon BB company band parading in his garden in Wiltshire last month. It is an annual thing for John who started and taught the band several decades ago.

John, now 89, tells me he has a set of matching chanters and pipe-making tools from Henry Starck that he is looking to pass on. Anyone interested should contact him on +44 (0)1590 675977.
