2022 Duncan Johnstone Contest Details/ Editor Features in YouTube Video

The Competing Pipers’ Association have issued the following: The Duncan Johnstone Memorial Piping Competition 2022 will be held on Saturday 12th March. This will be an in-person event.

B Grade contests will be held at the National Piping Centre. C Grade contests will be held at the National Piping Centre Otago Street.

Entry fees are £10 per event and are to be paid by PayPal at time of entry, via the CPA website. The contest is only open to current CPA members.

Pipers must enter the jig competitions for your light music grade as a condition of entry. There will be two jig events, P/A/B and C grade.

Playing Requirements: B Grade Piobaireachd – Submit 4 B Grade MSR – Submit 4 of each type of tune C Grade Piobaireachd – Submit 3 C Grade MSR – Submit 3 of each type of tune

The playing requirements for each Jig event are: submit 2, play 2 – 1 own choice and 1 Duncan Johnstone Composition. Prize giving details will be announced with the draw.

Entries open – Friday 11th February 6pm (UK Time) Entries close – Friday 25th February 6pm (UK Time) Draw announced – Monday 28th February. Email the Secretary Ross Miller here.

  • The Piobaireachd Society’s annual Archie Kenneth Quaich competition for amateur piobaireachd will also be held on March 12. The venue is the Scots Guards Club, Haymarket, Edinburgh.

A video in which our editor Robert Wallace discusses his piping career and his time at the now-defunct College of Piping has been posted on YouTube. Mr Wallace also plays a small selection of light music and the piobaireachd, the Old Woman’s Lullaby.

The video was made by professional filmmaker Andy Glen in 2010. Mr Glen is also responsible for the successful film about the College’s pipe band ‘Follow Me I’m Right Behind You’.
