A good day in a splendid place…..eight of Scotland’s best pipers under the age of 22 competed at Lochnell Castle near Oban for this prestigious championship. Three pipers from ‘abroad’ – Ontario, Vancouver, and Australia, were eligible but were unable to make the journey. Eligibility was dependent on this season’s results. Two trophies were on offer – in memory of Jimmy McIntosh for Piobaireachd, and William McCallum Senior for MSR….

This prestigious contest for professional solo pipers aged under 22 was held yesterday, October 19th, at Lochnell Castle, Benderloch, Argyll, courtesy the Earl of Dundonald. The overall champion, by piobaireachd preference, was Cameron May, from Dillarburn, Lanarkshire. My words last week about our tradition being secure with the younger generation of pipers was here manifest. The ceòl mòr began with a fine rendition of the Daughter’s Lament from Luke Kennedy. Composed, controlled, he glided through this difficult piece making light work of the top hand technicals. It was as an assured a delivery as one could have hoped for. The overall champion piper with most points in the Piobaireachd and March, Strathspey & Reel sections was Brodie Watson Massey. This was a very successful day at Lochnell Castle, Argyll. The audience was quite an increase on last year and all were treated to a sumptuous lunch courtesy our host Lord Archie Cochrane. Overall winner with a first in March, Strathspey and Reel and a fourth in Piobaireachd was Ruairidh Brown, Dunblane.
