Piping Instructor George Heriot’s School, Edinburgh/ SSPDT Paid Internships Offer

The school is seeking to recruit a ‘skilled and inspiring’ Piping Instructor to provide piping tuition to pupils from both Primary and Secondary sections of the School.  Part-time 15 hours per week; Permanent, Term-Time Only £12,928 – £14,963 per annum.

The notice reads: ‘Individual piping lessons take place during the school day and there are practices for the Pipe Band and smaller groups at times by arrangement both before and after the school day

‘The Heriot’s Pipe Band is part of the CCF and members of the band take part in events organised under the aegis of the Scottish Independent Schools CCFs, such as an annual Beating Retreat at Holyrood Palace and an annual Pipes and Drums competition for schools with CCF contingents.

‘The Pipe Band also competes in other inter-school events and in both minor and major RSPBA championships. The Pipe Band plays a prominent part in school life, playing at School events such as Open Morning, the Heriot’s Usher Hall Christmas concert, Founder’s Day, Sports Day and Senior School Prizegiving, and also has opportunities to play at public events.   

‘The new Piping Instructor will work under the direction of the full-time Pipe Major in ensuring the development of the School’s young pipers  leading to membership of the Pipe Band and in preparing the Band for playing engagements.

‘In addition to excellent piping skills the new Instructor must be an excellent teacher and be able to enthuse and motivate pupils from both Junior and Senior Schools who have taken up the pipes in their learning. He/she must also be in sympathy with the aims of the School and its CCF contingent.   

Hours of work – Normal hours of work are 15 hours per week over 2 days between Monday and Friday, term time only plus selected out of school events and band practices which will include weekend work. Some band practices will also take place during holiday periods and additional payment will be made for these. We will consider applications from suitably qualified and experienced instructors seeking part-time work over 2 or more days. Schools Pipe Band Programme – Piping and Drumming paid internships  

 The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust is a national charity that helps expand and strengthen piping and drumming tuition and pipe bands in state schools.  

 The Trust is interested in supporting careers for pipers and drummers.  The Trust therefore offers paid internships that help a snare drummer and piper on their way to becoming qualified instructors.  The internships are based at Preston Lodge High School in East Lothian.

Once two internship places are filled at PLHS, there may be options for internships in other areas depending on a number of factors.  More information and downloadable documents are available at  www.sspdt.org.uk
