Elaine Lee reports….Celebrating its 12th year, the Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming invites the best young pipers & drummers to compete in the Balmoral Classic: US Junior Solo Bagpiping & Drumming Championships. The competitions will be held 9:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Bellefield Hall, 315 S Bellefield Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Pipers will compete in Pìobaireachd, the classical music of Highland bagpiping, and MSR (march, strathspey, and reel), the traditional bagpipe competition medley. The Overall prize is a combination of scores from Pìobaireachd and MSR.
Drumming entrants compete in two styles: Hornpipe & Jig and MSR. The Overall prize is a combination of scores from Hornpipe & Jig and MSR. Piping and Drumming applicants are required to meet strict standards, based on amateur upper grade competitive successes. Though as of 2017, in order to attract more young drummers to the pipe band world, the Balmoral Classic has also included a competition for Novice Drummers.
