Guide to the Games News/ John Drysdale

Bryan Spalding, Piping Convenor at Inveraray Games: I wonder if you would be kind enough please to distribute the following press release to your readership/membership?

We are currently updating our Games website and the website administrator is updating our entry system. This work should be completed later this or early next month and we intend to open entries for our contests after successful testing.

The scheduled date for entries opening is Tuesday 23rd June for a duration two weeks. We realise that this is later than normal but we anticipate the work being undertaken currently will be beneficial to the overall system of entries and administration.

Please refer to the Games website and our social media channels for further updates and confirmation of entries opening. For related enquiry, please contact myself (Brian Spalding) at piping@inveraray-games.co.uk

Ashley MacDonald, North Uist Games Piping Secretary: ‘Could you add the North Uist games on 17th July please.’

Jock Drysdale
I was saddened to learn that John (Jock) Drysdale, a drummer with the Edinburgh City Police and Lothian & Borders Police Pipe Bands, passed away recently at the age of 83, writes Alistair Aitken OBE.

Jock Drysdale

Jock and I were colleagues in the drum corps during my twelve years as a guest player in both bands.  We shared many memorable experiences with the band at competitions and other events throughout the UK and in other countries.

A native of Fife, Jock was born in April 1943.  His initial pipe band experience was with the Alloa Collieries Pipe Band.  He joined Edinburgh City Police as a Constable in 1970 and quickly became a member of the famous Edinburgh City Police Pipe Band which subsequently changed its name to Lothian & Borders Police following regionalisation in 1975.  He was a band member throughout his Police career, including when the band won the Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championships in 1972 and 1975.

Jock became an RSPBA Drumming Adjudicator in 1979 when he was still a competing player.  He transferred to Unattached Adjudicator status in 2001 following completion of his Police service.  He then adjudicated at RSPBA Major Championships and many local competitions before retiring from the Adjudicators’ Panel on health grounds in early 2009.

Jock’s funeral will take place at Seafield Crematorium in Edinburgh on Thursday 21st May at 2.00pm. Deepest condolences to Jock’s wife Rena and family.
