Champion Piper at the North of Scotland’s Highland Games 2024 is Angus MacPhee, Inverness. He was presented with the new Glass Chanter Trophy and a cheque during a break at last week’s Northern Meeting.
The new perpetual trophy, inscribed ‘Champion Piper, North Highland Games Circuit’, replaces an earlier version which has gone missing.
Angus said: ‘I am very honoured to have won the Glass Chanter this year. I have always enjoyed going round the games since I started playing in novice march competitions. I am delighted to have won this lovely trophy and I’ll keep on going round the games until I can’t any more.’
Pictured with Angus below are the people behind the new award, Steven McCabe, Mrs Jean Cameron, sponsor Andrew Grant McKenzie, of the firm Highland Historian, and sponsor Councillor Michael Baird, Bonar Bridge.
Jean said: ‘The Glass Chanter is awarded on a perpetual basis to the piper with the most points accumulated at the following games: Inverness, Durness, Halkirk, Dornoch, Assynt, Strathpeffer, Tain, Helmsdale, and Glenurquhart. In the event of a tie, most points in piobaireachd counts.
‘Angus was the clear winner this year so all congratulations to him. His name will be inscribed on the trophy.’
Jean, who stewards at three of the above games, researched the previous glass chanter which was awarded till the early 2000s. The new trophy was made and designed by the firm Glasstorm, Tain.
