Bang in Penang

Scott Nicholson reports from south-east Asia… This year Penang, Malaysia, hosted the Southeast Asian Solo & Pipe Band Championships, dubbed the ‘Bang in Penang’. Taking place within the historic grounds of St. Xavier’s Institution in Georgetown, this event marked a departure from its usual location in Singapore, as organisers sought to broaden its reach across Asia.

Competitors hailing from Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia vied for the coveted Southeast Asian championship title.

The weekend began with solo piping and drumming on the Saturday, setting the stage for a street march through Penang featuring all participating pipe bands, including a unique composite band formed from all the solo competitors.

Sunday saw the eagerly awaited pipe band competition. Following this pipe majors, drum sergeants, and tutors were invited to a comprehensive Q&A session with the three adjudicators aimed at demystifying adjudication sheets and offering advice.

A special thanks to sponsors Ronnie Hien Bagpipes, Wallace Bagpipes, St Kilda Retail – Australia, Highland Supplies Singapore.
