Niall Stewart Recital/ Donald MacLeod Memorial/ Scottish Pipers Professional

Double Gold medallist Niall Stewart (pictured) is in recital at the Lewis & Harris Piping Society tomorrow evening, January 26. The concert is in the in the Caladh Hotel, Stornoway, at 7.30pm.

Niall has been the schools piping tutor for South Skye and Lochalsh for several years. He was originally taught by John Burgess.

Niall has won most of the top awards in piping including the Gold Medals at the Argyllshire Gathering and the Northern Meeting, the Silver Star for the Former Winners MSR at the Northern Meeting and the Donald MacLeod Memorial in 2017.

A spokesman for the Society said: ‘Niall has a relaxed, apparently effortless, style of playing, very reminiscent of his tutor, which is ideally suited to the informal setting of a recital. Two of the local youngsters will also be contributing to the evening’s entertainment.’ Admission £10, U-18 free.

On 1st March the L&H Piping Society recital will be at the same location featuring Neil Smith, Strathblane, a retired policeman originally from Point, Lewis, and James D MacKenzie, Shawbost, local school’s piping tutor. Both were taught by the late P/M Iain M Morrison.

The Junior P/M Donald MacLeod Memorial Competition will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, 4th April, and the main senior invitational competition on Friday, 5th April at 10am. The Society AGM is on Thursday, 22nd Feb at 7.30pm where new members are welcome. All the above events are in the Caladh Hotel.


SPA

The Scottish Pipers’ Association have announced that their Annual Professional competition will be held in the Piping Centre, McPhater Street, Glasgow, on April 6.

The competition, part sponsored by the Piobaireachd Society and the Competing Pipers’ Association, will have an open piobaireachd for P/A and non-CPA graded pipers, plus a B/C graded piobaireachd.

For light music, there will be an Open March and Open Strathspey & Reel competition for B grade and above and non-CPA members, plus and a separate C grade March and Strathspey & Reel.

Entries will go live on the SPA website on March 1. All competitors must be members of the SPA.
