Piobaireachd Society Announce Details of Annual Recital and Silver Chanter

The Piobaireachd Society has announced the pipers, tunes and the running order for their annual concert to be held in St Cecilia’s Hall, Edinburgh, on August 11th.

The concert part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, is entitled ‘Classical Pipe Music – Scotland’s Hidden Treasure’. Information is as follows:

The tunes will be presented in continuous fashion with no tuning in the hall. The concert time is 7 for 7.30pm with an expected finish circa 9.40pm. There will be a small reception at the conclusion at which the audience can mingle and chat with the pipers. Tickets at the door or online here.



The Society are co-sponsors of the prestigious Silver Chanter recital/competition. It is at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Gaelic College, Sleat, Skye, on August 7th, at 7 for 7.30pm. Entry at the door £10 (£5 concessions).

Six champion pipers, Sarah Muir, Fred Morrison, Alasdair Henderson, Innes Smith, Derek Midgley and Angus MacColl have submitted four high quality MacCrimmon tunes, one of which they will be asked to play. Each piper qualified via their success at the Skye Gathering, Argyllshire Gathering or Northern Meeting 2023.

The judge is Robert Wallace, President of the Piobaireachd Society. Well-known piping academic, Dr J Decker Forrest, will act as Fear an Tigh.

Mr Wallace said: ‘The Society is delighted to be able to work with Sabhal Mòr and Torabhaig  malt whisky to bring the Silver Chanter to the public once more on its home island.’

The concert will be recorded for later transmission. The Silver Chanter trophy is now on permanent display at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig.
