Oban Pipe Band is delighted to announce that Andy Matthews has been elected as pipe major, with Niall Jordan as his pipe sergeant, writes Band President Iain Hurst.
Andy and Niall will succeed Daniel Johnstone and James Rosie, who have led the band since 2018.
The band committee wish to thank Daniel and James for their contributions to the band and the successful last season of competition in 2019. It is unfortunate that this run was halted by the pandemic.
Andy (above, with Niall alongside) initially joined the band in 2012, a year after finishing with the Oban High School Pipe Band. He was an active member up until the end of the 2019 season. He returns to the band after a brief stint playing with Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia, where practices and the competitive season were also cut short due to the pandemic.
Andy is very much looking forward to developing the talented, young players coming through the ranks and is delighted to be doing this alongside Niall. They believe there is a great balance of youth and experience in the band and are excited to get going.
Andy and Niall will work with Alan Irvine, leading drummer since 2018, and a new programme of music is already underway. It is planned that an informal social gathering will be held soon to allow all band members – existing players along with several new members – to meet up before practices resume, hopefully in the next few weeks. With no pipe band activity since March 2020, everyone will be looking forward eagerly to a full season of performance and competition in season 2022.
The committee and band members wish Andy, Niall and Alan every success for the future.
