P/M Ian McLellan
Allan Hamilton has reminded us that the very first interview in his ‘Piper’s Persuasion’ series was with Ian McLellan:
Condolences keep coming in. Betty Ann Muckle in Canada: ‘In 1974, My Erskine Pipe Band from Hamilton, Ontario, directed by Sandy Keith, travelled to compete in the Grade 2 contest at the Worlds (Stirling) and a few other Scottish contests.
‘What I remember most from that trip was one afternoon when we went as a band to watch a practice of the Glasgow Police. The band was in a circle on the grass and in the middle was the pipe major, conducting them.
‘He would stop them and sing to them, tell them how to emphasize certain notes in a phrase and they would play, and then, he would sing to them again and then conduct; so it went on, over and over. He wanted them to feel music in their notes. He was both persistent and patient.
‘That memory of watching Ian, watching a master teacher who had high standards and cared about raising the level of the overall musical performance, is a memory that lasts. What an example! Condolences to family and friends. Thank you, Ian.’
Piper David Weir
Reader Drew Aitken: ‘Can you be so kind as to post the following link on Piping Press? ‘David Weir passed away peacefully at home, with Sylvia by his side, on 23rd November 2025, aged 74. Funeral service at Mortonhall Crematorium, Main Chapel, on Tuesday 9th December 2025 at 10am, to which all family and friends are invited.’
