Piping Press
Edinburgh is the place to be tomorrow (November 26) if you want to hear some excellent live piping and at the same time support the younger generation of players.
Firstly George Watson’s College are staging their first ever ‘Caritas Banner’ contest for piobaireachd players aged under 18. It is sponsored by Kintail Bagpipes with a beautiful banner for the winner courtesy of the Piobaireachd Society.
Organiser P/M Ben Duncan writes: ‘The competition will be located in the Music School, with all events starting at 9.30am. Admission for spectators is free and tea and coffee will be available.
Trophies provided by Watsons’ former pupils await the winners
‘There is a great entry in all events with 19 in the 18 & Under and 20 in the 14 & Under Piobaireachd. It promises to be a good day of classical pipe music with some of the very best young players performing.

‘Prizes include ‘The Caritas Banner’ presented by the Piobaireachd Society, 1st-3rd place quaichs from our generous Watsonian donors, and a beautiful silver mounted David Glen practice chanter, with King’s Coronation year hallmark, from our sponsor at Kintail Bagpipes. Scots Guards KO
More excellent piping can be heard on the same day at the Scots Guards Club in Haymarket, Edinburgh, for the next round of the popular Scots Guards Knock Out.
Competing pipers are two of the best of our young professional: Angus MacPhee and Brodie Watson-Massey. The fun starts at 4pm and entry is £6 at the door and pies and refreshments are available.
In last month’s heat, defending champion Angus MacColl Junior narrowly beat Bobby Allen by one vote.
