Details of the Piobaireachd Society’s annual recital ‘Classical Pipe Music – Scotland’s Hidden Treasure’ have been announced. The recital takes place next Sunday, August 29, in the National Piping Centre’s Otago Street building in Glasgow. Time is 7 for 7.30pm.
The pipers, their tunes and the order of play are as follows:
Craig Sutherland: Lament for the Lowland Clearances (Karen McCrindle-Warren)
Stuart Liddell: Field of Gold (P/M Donald MacLeod)
P/M Ben Duncan: Catherine’s Lament
Decker Forrest: Battle of the Pass of Crieff

Admission is £10 at the door. The recital will be recorded in high quality audio. The recording will placed on the member’s area of the Society website as soon as possible after the show. Join the Society here – £40 three years, £15 one year, £5 juniors and students.

This is a black tie event (performers only). There will be no tuning between performances, the pipers playing in and playing out on the return to the ground. MC is Society President Robert Wallace.

Tunes for Argyllshire Gathering Gala Competition
The Argyllshire Gathering have announced the tunes for the Piobaireachd section of their 150th Anniversary competition to be held in Oban on Wednesday (Aug 25). The tunes and the pipers who will play them, are, in performance order:
- Angus D MacColl – I Got a Kiss of the King’s Hand
- Finlay Johnston – Lament for the Children
- Alasdair Henderson – Battle of Auldearn No.2
- Stuart Liddell – In Praise of Morag
- Sarah Muir – Old Men of the Shells No.1
- Jamie Forrester – Earl of Ross’s March
- William McCallum – Lachlan MacNeill Campbell of Kintarbert’s Fancy
The competition begins in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls at 12 noon and admission is free. The ceòl mòr will be followed by an MSR contest (4pm approx.) and, in the evening, a Medley event.
There is a £500 overall prize for the winner (Piob and MSR only), and prizemoney of £300, £200 and £100 for individual competitions.
Piping Convenor Torquil Telfer has announced that the event will be videoed for broadcast on the AG website in due course.
Mr Telfer said: ‘The high quality videos will be free for everyone to enjoy. I think they will be a nice way to commemorate the occasion and they also give us an opportunity to thank our very generous sponsors.
‘We look forward to welcoming everyone to Oban on Wednesday and also to the Games the following day.’
