Glass Chanter Retained by Angus MacPhee

At a meeting of the Inverness Piping Society, Angus MacPhee was presented with the 2025 Glass Chanter for the second year running, write Steven McCabe and Jean Cameron.

The chanter and a cash prize of £200 go to the piper with the most points in the North Games – those held north of the Great Glen. In the event of a draw the piper with the highest piobaireachd score wins.

This year competitors came regularly from the Central Belt to compete, and some from overseas indicated that they hoped to try again next year. All this is boosting the north games and the Glass Chanter can take some credit for that.

Angus’s win is a credit to his commitment to solo piping and to competing on the Highland Games circuit. Those games where points count towards the Glass Chanter are: Inverness, Assynt, Halkirk, Dornoch, Tain, Invercharron, Helmsdale, Strathpeffer, Durness and Glenurquhart.

After receiving his trophy Angus gave a few tunes to complete the evening at the golf club. (Inverness Piping Society’s monthly meeting has seen had growing attendance since moving to the club.)

Councillor Michael Baird and Mr Andrew Mackenzie are the main sponsors this year and funding has been secured for the next two years. Michael is in the photo [top] presenting the chanter to Angus.

The trophy is displayed at the Queen’s Own Highlander’s Museum at Fort George. Former winners include the late P/M Alasdair Gillies of the QOH.
