Piping Society Honoured to be Part of Visit by His Majesty The King to Gordons Museum

HM The King meets meets Fraser Maitland of Aberdeen Piping Society

The Aberdeen Piping Society (TAPS), established 2023, has a simple aim – to encourage and nurture the playing of the Great Highland Bagpipe. Our 35+ members of all ages and experience, meet up regularly to play pipes, and share stories, writes Fraser Maitland.

Despite being a young organisation, we’ve provided two new trophies for local events, including the creation of a new junior Piobaireachd competition at the Aberdeen Highland Games (the first in its history), provided judges at local games and indoor events, and supported a new series of professional piping recitals held at the Gordon Highlanders Museum, putting our national instrument back in the local spotlight.

TAPS was therefore honoured to share their success with His Majesty The King at the Museum in Aberdeen on 20th Jan 2025. The King was mainly there to meet 99-year-old D-Day veteran Gordon Highlander, Jim Glennie. His visit included an intimate exchange between the monarch, Mr Glennie and volunteers and staff at this magnificent venue.

Artefacts include a kilt from the Battle of the Somme with mud from the battlefield still on it. This was among many extraordinary historical items on show for The King.

Stuart Samson outside the Gordon Highlanders Museum after piping in HM The King

Stuart Samson, former P/M of The Gordon Highlanders and one time Director of Army Bagpipe Music, was on duty to pipe The King on his arrival and exit. Despite the cold temperatures, a fine rendition of Cock o’ the North and The Gordon’s March echoed throughout the museum.

Stuart and myself (President, TAPS) had the unique and rare pleasure of meeting The King in The Gallery, overlooked by paintings of officers and pipers of historical importance. His Majesty’s interest in bagpiping was apparent, and genuine.

Video Highlights of The King’s visit:

He asked many pointed questions, including what tie I was wearing. It was the the Piobaireachd Society tie and, as everyone knows, His Majesty is Patron of the Society. He seemed impressed.

He was intrigued how TAPS is helping to shape and ensure local piping continues to flourish. He showed a keen knowledge of our instrument.

Truly a special day for TAPS, the Museum, and Aberdeen. Organised meticulously by John McLeish and his team, congratulations to eveyone involved.
