Renowned Canadian piper, composer, and author William (Bill) Livingstone has released the fifth volume of his celebrated series, A Piobaireachd Diary.
The album continues his dedication to exploring and interpreting the classical music of the great Highland bagpipe, a journey that has spanned decades and earned him international acclaim.
By Andrew B Giles
Bill, a notable figure in the world of piping, was the founding Pipe Major of the 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band. Under his leadership, the band made history in 1987 as the first non-Scottish band to win the Grade 1 title at the World Pipe Band Championships. The band’s recording, Live in Ireland, remains the best-selling piping and drumming live album of all time.
A Piobaireachd Diary Vol. 5 reflects Livingstone’s lifelong passion for piobaireachd—the classical music of the Highland bagpipe. Featuring a carefully curated selection of tunes, the album blends masterful technique with emotional depth, offering a fresh perspective on this traditional art form.
This volume builds on the success of its predecessors, Volumes 1-4, which have been widely praised for their artistry and insight.
‘Piobaireachd is the soul of our instrument and our culture,’ said Bill. ‘With this album, I aim to share that soul with listeners, both old and new, and to preserve the rich heritage of our music for future generations.’
Born in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Bill began his piping journey under the guidance of his father, a Scottish immigrant. He later honed his craft with legendary pipers, John MacFadyen, Donald MacLeod and Captain John MacLellan.
In addition to his success as a band leader, Livingstone is an accomplished soloist, having won numerous prestigious awards, including both Gold Medals and the Clasp at Inverness.
His contributions extend beyond performance. He is a celebrated composer, author of two books of original tunes, and a revered teacher who has mentored some of the world’s most accomplished pipers. His autobiography, ‘Preposterous, Tales to Follow’, provides an intimate look at his extraordinary life and career.
