Robert Reid Pipes for Sale at Glasgow Auction House

The family of Robert Reid have put up for auction selections of pipes and chanters belonging to the famous piper.

There are six lots comprising full sets of pipes, a ‘child’s set’ and two ‘small’ sets, and a box of miscellaneous joints and chanters. They will go under the hammer at McTears in Glasgow this Thursday, December 12, at 10am.

One set could be that which is featured in the picture we ran on Friday of Reid playing along with his brother at a wedding (above). This is speculation, but the pipes do look similar. The auctioneer’s estimate for this set is £300-£500:

Pipes and leather case with Robert Reid’s name

The notice accompanying this sale, lot 1047, reads: ‘The chanter marked for P Henderson of Glasgow, in turned hardwood and with silver sole, hallmarked for Glasgow 1914, the drones with thistle engraved white metal and simulated ivory mounts, along with a practice chanter, with leather case.

‘Note from vendor: The bagpipes included in this sale were either made by and/or were the property of Pipe Major Robert Reid (1895-1965), 15 times winner at Cowal Highland Games, 16 times winner at Bridge of Allan, multiple wins at Oban, Inverness, Skye, Braemar, Aboyne, London, Crieff, etc. Signed – Robert Reid Bower (grandson of P/M Robert Reid) and Barbara J Paterson (grand-daughter of P/M Robert Reid).’
