Catriona Hill and PS Summer School/ Scottish Pipers’ Veterans Entries

The Piobaireachd Society has announced that their 2025 Summer School of Ceol Mòr has sold out with 31 students signed up, a significant increase from this year.

The school takes place at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig Gaelic College on the island of Skye from June 1 – 6.

President Robert Wallace said: ‘There is considerable appetite for high level instruction in ceol mòr. The Society is delighted to be able to provide this.’

Returning next year will be student Ms Catriona Hill, daughter of Bob Hill of London fame. Catriona appeared on the front of the Piping Times in September 1954 (above). The story accompanying the picture reads:

‘The photograph on the front page this month is of Miss Catriona Hill, daughter of Robert Hill, late pipe-major of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Her playing at her home in London after the competitions in April so impressed one of our talent scouts that he could not rest until this issue was produced.

‘Catriona is a young lady of considerable ability, as can be seen from her impressive record. Her accuracy of playing is a credit to the high standard of the London circle of piping. Her awards in the past four years are as follows:

1951 Hertfordshire Highland Games, 2nd March (under 18)
1952 Brighton Festival, 1st March, Strathspey & Reel
1953 Brighton Festival, 2nd March, Strathspey & Reel
1953 Hertfordshire Highland Games, 1st March (under 18)
1953 Glen Urquhart Highland Gathering, 2nd March, Strathspey & Reel (under 18)
1954 Brighton Festival, 1st March, Strathspey & Reel (under 21)

PS Summer School 2024….Catriona was unable to play her pipes due to an arm injury, but as instructor Jack Taylor blew, she played MacCrimmon’s Sweetheart:
