Captain John Contest Entries/ Schools Teaching Jobs/ CLASP Practice Chanters

Entries are now open for the Captain John MacLellan Memorial competition run by the Army School of Piping in association with the Competing Pipers’ Association.

The competition is only open to CPA members. It is on October 5 at 9am and the venue is the Army School at Inchdrewer House, Edinburgh. Entries, via the CPA website, close on Friday (Sept.20).

There are piobaireachd and light music contests for all grades, P (6 tunes), A (6 tunes), B (4) and C (3). The number of tunes to be submitted, and prizes awarded, reflect the status of the contest. Submitted tunes cannot be altered.

There is a limit of 25 in each grade. There is already a reserve list for B and C grades.

School Jobs

The Scottish Schools Piping & Drumming Trust: An opportunity has arisen for a self-employed snare drum tutor at Forres Academy, and associated primary schools, and Elgin Primary Schools. The job involves approximately two days teaching in Forres and one day in Elgin. There is potential for expansion. Contact Fiona Caldwell at fiona.caldwell75@gmail,com.

Royal High Pipe Band, Edinburgh, also seeks a drumming instructor. The band, after a break of two years, is hoping to rejuvenate. Enquiries to info@sspdt.org.uk .

Strathmore Schools Pipe Band Committee is seeking a piping tutor to develop a band in the Blairgowrie area. The job involves teaching children from P5 to S6 in groups of 3-7. Rate is £180 per day plus expenses. The instructor will be required to work two days per week, run an evening pipe band practice, and attend competitions and events as required. CLASP

Helen Urquhart: CLASP are now offering online practice chanter competitions for adults using pre-recorded video submissions. Entries are open for the November 1 video submission deadline. 

The overall winner receives a ‘session’ chanter. Entrants need to become a CLASP member, (currently £15 for 2024), get graded by CLASP, then enter the November 1st Video Submission Competition (£7.50 per event). More here.
