George Watson’s Contest/ CPA Award/ School Pipes

Organiser Ben Duncan has asked us to remind all parents and tutors the there are still places available for young pipers wishing to play in the new George Watson’s piobaireachd competition.

Ben writes: ‘Would you mind please sharing this advert for ‘The Caritas Banner’ on Piping Press? Entries are healthy but there are still spaces in all events.

‘This could be a great opportunity for young aspiring pipers to perform their tunes to a knowledgeable panel and the chance to win the very first Caritas Banner. Closing date is this Friday, November 10.’

Competing Pipers

The results from the London competition saw the conclusion of the annual B and C grade piobaireachd league for 2023, writes CPA Secretary Lachie Dick.

For context, there are approximately 10 contests throughout the year which are open only to CPA members in these grades. The results from these generate the league table.

The events have support from the William Grant Foundation. This year the winners were Keith Bowes in the C grade and Angus MacPhee in the B grade. Here is Angus receiving his trophy from Derek Midgley (CPA president) at the weekend:

School Pipes

Ullapool and Gairloch pupils in the far north west of Scotland have pipes on loan from the Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust.

Twenty pupils at Ullapool and Gairloch High Schools and associated primary schools (Achiltibuie, Ullapool, Gairloch, Poolewe, and Bualnaluib) will benefit from the award.  Pictured are some of the pupils with their new pipes.

Piping Instructor Eddie Seaman comments: ‘We are incredibly grateful to SSPDT for the loan of bagpipes, which have been very well received by our pupils.  Ullapool and Gairloch have a rich history of piping and Scottish music, and the contribution of bagpipes through the SSPDT’s lending initiative has been greatly valuable to its continuation.’
