Yesterday I mentioned the City of Edinburgh Police Pipe Band under P/M Ian MacLeod and I wonder if anyone can give us the names of the individuals in this shot taken of the band with multiple trophies in the early 1970s. Email them please, to pipingpress@gmail.com.
The history of the band and its sorry demise was given in great detail in a series of three features in the Pipe Band magazine beginning October 2014. Access them here.
Tonight sees the Donald MacDonald Quaich competition at the Clan Donald Centre, Armadale, Skye. Pipers taking part are Bruce Gandy, Stuart Liddell, Roderick MacLeod, Douglas Murray and Niall Stewart.
The judge is Dr Jack Taylor and each piper will be asked to play a piece from the Donald MacDonald books; tickets are £8 and £4 and the sponsor is the Glencoe Foundation, USA. Each piper is in line for substantial appearance money and a first prize of £1,000 is rumoured….just as it should be for professional pipers of this calibre.
If you are going and want to impress the Gaelic speakers, why not rehearse some of the pipe part names below?
An addition to our PP Audio Archive today is, by popular demand, the recording of Steven McWhirter’s winning MSR at the World Solo Drumming Championship last October in Glasgow. Steven is accompanied by his pipe major Stuart Liddell. Together they make an unbeatable pair.
