Ross Watson of Broadleys Bagpipes & Reeds is the new owner of the assets and brand of RT Shepherd & Co. In an interview with Piping Press he has spoken about his decision to make an offer for the company.

Ross (47) was 28 years with Bob Shepherd, working at his premises in Cardenden, Fife. Almost three years ago he decided to branch out on his own. Broadleys Bagpipes & Reeds, named after the district where he is based, was born.

The firm’s workshop is in a rural area between Kirkcaldy and Kinghorn, Fife. Ross is currently arranging transfer of machinery from Cardenden. He plans to employ two current employees from RT Shepherd, including one of there top reedmakers.

How he markets his businesses in the future is still in a state of flux but he says that quality will continue to be the central thrust of everything that he produces.

His chanters and reeds are already played by some of the top Grade 1 bands in the world with success at the very highest level.

Ross began his piping career as a young boy being taught by Jock Innes of the Kelty and Blairadam band. From there he went to Lochgelly High School juvenile band winning the Worlds with Tom Brown, and eventually graduating to Dysart and Dundonald where he played under P/M Davy Barnes.

After school he was invited by Bob Shepherd to take on an apprenticeship. He studied all aspects of manufacture and is now an expert pipe and reed maker with years of experience.

‘The name RT Shepherd means something to me,’ said Ross. ‘It was a sad day when the company had to close. My decision to make an offer for the firm’s assets and name was one of both the head and the heart. I put a lot into the firm whilst I was there for nearly three decades and had great admiration for Bob and everything he achieved.

‘I know I am taking a lot on my shoulders but at the end of the day it is all about the products and the personal attributes of the people making them. I am passionate about what I do but I keep my head down and get on with it.’
