Pipes for Aberdeen Pupils/ Lochaber Juniors Contest Entry

Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust: Aberdeenshire pupils are on the road to a life-time of piping success, thanks to an award of new, on loan pipes.

Fifteen pupils at Meldrum Academy and Rayne North Primary will benefit from the award. Pictured are some of the pupils at Meldrum Academy with their new pipes, alongside their piping tutor Andrew Gray.

Linda Moggach, Faculty Head of Performing Arts at Meldrum Academy comments, “The pupils are delighted with their new pipes, which will make a big difference to their learning. The pipes will open doors to exciting opportunities such as taking part in events and performing with the schools pipe band.”

The charity also runs a Music Enterprise Award scheme that helps young pipers raise funds so that they can afford their own set.  By playing at weddings and other events, as well as busking and other enterprising activities, young pipers can soon raise the cash they need.

Meldrum Academy and Associated Primary Schools receive tuition from Piping Instructor Andrew Gray. The tuition is provided by Aberdeenshire Council Instrumental Music Service.

The Scottish Schools Pipes and Drums Trust is a registered charity promoting the playing of pipes and drums in Scottish state schools. The charity offers cash grants for tuition and other related band costs and organises the Scottish Schools Pipe Band Championships – the biggest schools piping competition in the world. Ken Cameron of Lochaber Piping Society: The Society is planning to hold its annual Junior Piping & Drumming Competition on Saturday 26th March.

This year we will return to a live, in-person format, albeit probably with some covid restrictions on the day.

I attach an Entry Form detailing the classes available and the competition rules. This all to the familiar pattern we have successfully organised in the past, although the 2020 event was cancelled at the last minute, so it’s now three years since it was last run in this format.
