The RSPBA have today taken the decision to cancel the UK Pipe Band Championships due to be held at Lurgan, Northern Ireland, on June 13.
This means that only the Scottish (July 25th – Dumbarton) and the World Championships (August 14/15 – Glasgow Green) remain of the Major Championships calendar for this year. This will mean a loss of revenue for the Association which has only just completed the £900,000 refurbishment of their Headquarters in Glasgow.
In a statement Ian Embelton, Chief Executive of the RSPBA said: ‘In response to the current Coronavirus outbreak (CoVid-19), we have made the decision to cancel the 2020 United Kingdom Pipe Band Championships in Lurgan.
‘Our decision is based on the latest guidance from the Scottish and Northern Ireland Governments, as well as advice taken from our key partners. Please note this championship will not be rescheduled in 2020.’
The cancellations are in line with the suggestions made by our editor on Sunday in a column for Piping Press. Read it here.
