The premier of a new piping film will take place at the Piobaireachd Society Conference it has been announced.
‘MacCrimmon’s Gold’ is made by Breton film director Gerard Alle and features Patrick Molard and Piobaireachd Society President Dr Jack Taylor among others.
The blurb reads: ‘Pioabireachd or Ceol Mor is a musical genre full of spirituality, born in the Scottish Highlands….each of the nine notes of the bagpipe seem to express the memory of an extinct world…’
The film will be shown on the afternoon of the conference which takes place at the National Piping Centre, McPhater Street, Glasgow, on March 23 beginning 9am. The conference is open to non-members.
The full conference fee including dinner and evening piping ceilidh is £55. A day ticket (includes lunch) is £35 and Competing Pipers Association members and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland students can gain admission for only £10 (excludes lunch).
There is also a dinner only option for £25. The dinner begins at 7pm (melon with seasonal berries, roast breast of chicken in a thyme jus, crannachan, tea/coffee shortbread).
Other features of the conference are a paper by Dr Taylor on the early competitions featuring musical illustrations from Iain Speirs and John Dew and a bagpipe styled on an 1844 set by Donald MacDonald will be played.
Prior to the film showing there will be a panel discussion chaired by the BBC’s Gary West with pipers Tom Speirs, Andrew Wright, James Burnett and John Dew all taking part.
