World Solo Drumming 2018 Off and Running

With a cold start at Glasgow Caledonian University, the first competitors in Adult and Juvenile contests started their long road to glory at 9am this morning.
Organisers have been in situ from several hours earlier and there were warm ups going on from 8am, and slightly earlier.
In the earliest qualifiers, big names like Blair Brown, Steven Creighton, recent runner-up Mikey McKenna and reigning Champion Steven McWhirter, took their chances to qualify for the semi-final, where the pre-qualified names awaited.
A few hundred performances later, we will be at the sharp end of the contests by around 3pm as Finals begin to settle the winners.
The Adult Final, live streamed, will close at around 6.30pm, with the results and prize giving expected at around 7pm local time (also being streamed).
Spectators were arriving in larger numbers for the qualifiers than before, causing standing room only in some cases, given the big names playing in smaller lecture theatres before reaching the larger semi final and final venues.
In the Juvenile snare category, the top Grade (5 MSR) started at 9am with a raft of young gun Grade 1 players getting away in a straight final alongside the top players in a few Juvenile bands. The International Solo Tenor contests will get underway in the early afternoon.
For those travelling and using the adjacent car park, (next to the bus station), remember to have your ticket endorsed at the University security area – it will be a considerable saving on regular Saturday parking charges. All part of our public service.
We have Piping Press columnists and commentators attending and will bring the usual early results service, followed by analysis and commentary next week.

The live stream is on The Worlds website later today at https://www.theworlds.co.uk/world-solo-drumming-championships

The RSPBA will also be recording the Juvenile 5 Final and Adult Final for broadcast on our YouTube Channel after the event, for more details when that’s available and to see all our Championship content consider subscribing to our YouTube Channel.’
