Elaine Lee reports….Celebrating its 12th year, the Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming invites the best young pipers & drummers to compete in the Balmoral Classic: US Junior Solo Bagpiping & Drumming Championships. The competitions will be held 9:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Bellefield Hall, 315 S Bellefield Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Pipers will compete in Pìobaireachd, the classical music of Highland bagpiping, and MSR (march, strathspey, and reel), the traditional bagpipe competition medley. The Overall prize is a combination of scores from Pìobaireachd and MSR.

Drumming entrants compete in two styles: Hornpipe & Jig and MSR. The Overall prize is a combination of scores from Hornpipe & Jig and MSR. Piping and Drumming applicants are required to meet strict standards, based on amateur upper grade competitive successes. ‘The 12th annual Balmoral Classic will be better than ever, with three new venues a short walk apart,’ says the Balmoral School’s director, George Balderose. ‘The weekend event includes a Friday night reception with hors d’oeuvres and entertainment, the competition on Saturday, and a Celtic music concert featuring Cape Breton pipers Nuallan on Saturday night. New letters added today. They are on piper John Stuart MacMurchie, a JB Robertson tune for South African leader Jan Smuts, and a request for information on the All-Ireland contest in 1964. Read more here.
