Norman Maclean, piper, Gaelic comedian, writer, author and teacher has passed away on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
Norman had become frail during the summer and on August 3 was admitted to Uist & Barra Hospital where he passed away. Norman was 80. He was brought up in the south side of Glasgow of island parents.
He won the Bardic Crown and Gold Medal for singing at the Glasgow National Mod in 1967. He was taught piping by ‘Seonnaidh Roidein’, John MacDonald of the Glasgow Police.
He had a number of television series principally Tormod air Telly in which he appeared as comedian and storyteller. He wrote the famous pipe tunes ‘My Land’ and ‘Scarce o’ Tatties’.
He taught at Garthamlock Secondary and at Bellahouston Academy in Glasgow and also at Oban High where he taught Gaelic.
He was the author of a controversial autobiography the ‘Leper’s Bell’.
