Capital Opportunity to Lead City of Edinburgh Pipe Band

The City of Edinburgh Pipe Band, which was formed in 1947 in the Midlothian mining community of Danderhall, is seeking a successor to Pipe Major Lachie Dick, who has decided to stand down because of work commitments.

Announcing the band’s recruitment plans, band secretary, Paul White, said: ‘P/M Barry Donaldson left the band at the end of last season to concentrate his efforts on the City of Edinburgh Schools Pipe Band.  We were sorry to lose Barry – he was a hard act to follow – but we soon found a replacement in Lachie Dick, who had spent five seasons with the band before joining Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia for a year.

‘Unfortunately, the demands of Lachie’s job – he is a junior doctor – mean he is unable to commit the time required to lead an ambitious Grade 2 band.  While we hope that Lachie will play a leading role in our band for many years to come, we are now seeking a new Pipe Major who can drive the band forward in our 70th anniversary year and beyond.’

The band say that whilst they have an open mind on the experience and track record of candidates for the Pipe Major’s role, the following qualities are desirable:

  • The ability to make the band a consistently competitive force in Grade 2
  • The ambition to make the band the destination of choice for pipers and drummers who live, study or work in Edinburgh and the surrounding area
  • A commitment to youth development, with connections which enable the development of a talent pool which the band can draw upon
  • A clear vision for what s/he would like the band to achieve in the short to medium term

The band is looking to the future with optimism.  Mr White added:

‘The opportunity to lead the senior band in Scotland’s capital will prove attractive to current Pipe Majors who are seeking to test themselves in a different environment and to pipers with ambition and talent who want to make their mark in Edinburgh and beyond.

‘We have no fixed ideas on who will lead the band during the next phase of its proud history, but we look forward to finding out who the right person is and what they can offer.’

Candidates who wish to discuss the opportunity informally are invited to call Paul on 07941 679015, while expressions of interest should be submitted to paulwhite2@blueyonder.co.uk no later than 30th June 2017.  All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence.
