Good news everyone; your favourite piping web magazine is now back in the land of the living, writes the Editor. After a day of frustration caused by a serious outage in the Bluehost servers in the US we were down for a total of 15 hours – not good enough.
However to be fair to them they are, by all accounts, one of the most reliable in the business and since our launch in September 2014 I can’t remember any difficulties remotely like this. They have told their clients it was caused by a bug in their software, and given the time it took their engineers to fix things was clearly very serious.
Fingers crossed we won’t have any more problems as this is a very busy weekend of piping in Scotland. The major event is the Uist & Barra Professional tomorrow from 9am. Some of the top players in the world are taking part. It is being Livestreamed so even if you cannot manage you have the opportunity to watch these superb pipers’ performances. Here is the link.
Over in Edinburgh the best amateur pipers will be gathering for the Piobaireachd Society’s Archie Kenneth Quaich. Around 30 pipers will play with six going through to a final. The judges are Bruce Hitchings and Willie Morrison. The competition is held in the Royal Scottish Pipers’ Society rooms courtesy the Society.
Back in Glasgow we have the schools competition promoted by the Glasgow Highland Club. We’ll have a report and pictures so stay tuned.
Back to Edinburgh and the Army has its solo and mini band contest at Inchdrewer House tomorrow and Sunday.
Still with competition, Les Hutt has sent these results from the Inverness Junior contest. Les said: ‘Please find attached the results of the Inverness Music Festival Piping, and photo of the winners of the Under 15 Piobaireachd contest (top – left to right) Kyle Cameron, Hamish Drennan and Tom Spencer. Kyle went on to win the Under 15 MSR and the Jig. Judges Euan MacCrimmon and Ian Hurst, were impressed by the general standard of playing from the Under 10 chanter contest upward. The sparse entries in the Under 18 groups are a cause for concern and we will look to discuss this further with the local tutors, particularly those in the schools.’
