New President Heads Pipe Bands Australia

Pipe Bands Australia has a new president following the retirement of Greg Gordon OAM after 19 years at the helm of the organisation.

Taking over is Chris Earl who was elected in Adelaide, South Australia, where state branch councillors held their biennial conference. The conference acknowledged Greig’s outstanding contribution to, and leadership of, the national association over almost two decades.

In accepting the gavel of office Chris congratulated Greg on his extraordinary service to pipe bands and in advancing the Australian movement on the international stage.

The new president said the aim of Pipe Bands Australia was to continue journey of evolution in the 21st century ‘by direction agreed through collaboration with member branches and bands, putting in place stronger strategic partnerships with kindred Scottish organisations within Australia that advance opportunities for performance and signature events, and by continuing to grow international relationships that secure our ongoing standing in a world-wide movement.’

‘Central to achieving sustainability and engagement as a national body, we are committed to ensuring a framework for training and contests that empowers and supports our branches and to maximise the participation of players and bands together with strong communication of our initiatives with those same players and bands.’

Chris, from the Victorian regional city of Bendigo, is President and Drum Major of Golden City Pipe Band and Vice-Principal of Dress and Drill in Victoria. Stephen Patterson from Sydney was elected secretary, succeeding Lindsay Chuck who retired after seven years in the position.
