SPA KO/ Audio Archive/ New Letter on the Birl

Scottish Pipers Association  President Tom Johnstone reports on Saturday’s first round in the SPA 2015-16 Knockout:
‘Finlay Johnston played first and his playing was flawless. He had been judging earlier in the day at the Shotts Juniors but shrugged off any fatigue; his ability still shone through.
‘John Patrick played very well and built up his playing to an exciting climax with a jig selection to finish. Both players gave commentary on their tunes during their performances which I though made it quite interesting. John Patrick, the holder, won the vote. We were indebted to Glenturret Distilleries for donating a bottle of 10 yr old malt for the raffle.

‘I think we will get a good attendance for the next round on 5th December Stuart Liddell vs Chris Armstrong at the College of Piping.’

John Patrick is pictured playing above at the Argyllshire Gathering.

The PP Audio Archive has new additions today; two pieces of ceol mor, the Blind Piper’s Obstinacy and Lament for Queen Anne, from one of our most prolific prize winners, Bill Geddes. Check them out here.

There are already some very choice recordings in the archive including Angus MacColl’s winning performance at this year’s Former Winners’ MSR at the Argyllshire Gathering. If any reader has material they think may be suitable for the archive please pass it on.

A new letter today dealing with difficulties in playing the birl. Read it here.
