Piping Live/ Silver Chanter/ Worlds

Piping Live! Glasgow International Piping Festival got off to a stormy start yesterday but the weather didn’t affect the performance or the enthusiasm of the New Zealand Police Pipe Band, who travelled 11,000 miles to compete at the Worlds on Saturday and to play at the festival. They are pictured above with new P/M, Northern Ireland’s Emmet Conway.

Over the next four days the band will perform at various points throughout the city. Other festival highlights: International Quartets Competition (tonight, Strathclyde Suite, Royal Concert Hall), which sees pipers from seven G1 bands compete, Lowland and Border Pipers Society Showcase (Wednesday 12th  Piping Centre),  International Piping Duets (Thursday 13th, Art School), After World’s Shindig (Saturday 15th, Art School) with Fred Morrison, and ’40 years of Piping’ from the Tannahill Weavers concert (Sunday 16th, Piping Centre). For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.pipinglive.co.uk.

Add to the above the recitals by Grade 1 P/Ms and their leading drummers (Piping Centre Cafe from 2pm today), Pipe Idol, a competition for young pipers held at the Piping Centre, and the CLASP competition for amateur pipers. CLASP Organiser Margaret Dunn has sent this: ‘Please see below a link to the CLASP draw for the ‘World Solo Amateur Piping Competition’.

‘The competition will be held in the Trades Hall, in Glassford Street, with Grade 3 today, Tuesday, Grade 2 on Wednesday and Grade 1 on Thursday. (11th -13th August). The competition has attracted a good number of amateur pipers from all around the world. This year’s judges are Ann Gray, Willie Morrison and Wilson Brown. Eric and Maureen Stein have continued their kind sponsorship of an all expenses paid trip, for the overall winner of the Grade 1, to compete at the Amateur section of the Metro Cup in New York in 2016.’
