South West Scotland Boost for Piping & Drumming

Piping and Drumming in south-west Scotland has received a major boost with the formation of the new South West Scotland Piping & Drumming Academy.

The Academy will take the form of a Summer School, a series of teaching workshops and piobaireachd weekends.

SWSPDA Summer School:  13th to 17th July 2015. It will be based at SRUC Barony Campus, Parkgate, Dumfries. Piping Tutors this year are Jim Campbell (senior tutor), Jim Semple, Keith Bowes Snr., and Callum Moffat with back-up from John Cowan, Walter Cowan, Allan McMillan, and Alan Maltman. Drumming Tutors are Eric Ward (snare) and Lynne Ward (tenors) with back from David Sheridan. The closing Students’ Concert is on  Friday 17.07.15  –  admission free

The Piobaireachd Workshops will be conducted by William Geddes (pictured) on Saturdays from 10.00a.m. to 4.00p.m. in classroom at Barfil Farm, Crocketford, Dumfries. Other dates are: 26.09.15, 21.11.15, 16.01.16, end March / early April, and late May / early June. Dates for these last two still to be arranged.

Piping & Drumming workshops will commence in September 2015 with two workshops each month, one in Stranraer and the other in Dumfries. The piping tutor is Calum Moffat and the drumming Norris Thomson.

In addition to this there will be workshops for tutors entitled  ‘Starting on the Right Lines’. These will be held in early in September  2015 –  dates to be arranged. Tuition is by Alistair MacLaren from the National Piping Centre and the venue the classroom at Barfil Farm, Crocketford, Dumfries.
