Next Year’s Piobaireachd Society Set Tunes Released

new-piob-soc-logoThe eagerly anticipated list of tunes recommended by the Piobaireachd Society for the major competitions at Oban and Inverness in 2016 has now been posted.

The senior list contains such favourites as The Bells of Perth and Scarce of Fishing, the Gold Medal list challenging pieces such as the Stewart’s White Banner and the Silver Medal list some shorter but no less challenging pieces such as Lament for the Castle of Dunyveg and MacDonald’s Are Simple.

The lists are drawn up by the Society’s Music Committee who try to select tunes which are of equal weight, attractive to play and to listen to. The set tunes system has been very successful in setting suitable tests for pipers and also in broadening the repertoire.

Find out more about piobaireachd, or ceol mor, on the Piobaireachd Society website. Membership is open to all with an interest in this music. Read a report on their recent, very successful, Annual Conference here.
