Piping Association in Lost Trophy Appeal to Public

One of the world’s longest established piping societies, the Scottish Pipers’ Association, have launched an appeal for the return of trophies, or parts of trophies, that have gone missing over the past several years.
The trophies are associated with the SPA’s list of historic competitions for juvenile and professional piping. [wds id=”3″]

SPA Treasurer Jeannie Campbell: ‘I’ve made a list of lost trophies. Any help with finding them would be appreciated. After consulting with our President Tom Johnstone we agreed that we don’t want to mention any names at this stage. Some losses go back a long way. I didn’t know that two of our oldest cups, first used in 1918, had originally had lids until the 1958 winner sent me a photograph of himself with the cups. Photos attached. I don’t have pictures of the Malcolm MacLean Currie, Toye-Richmond or the Oban Times Gold Medal.’

We would appeal to the piping world to do what it can to recover this lost (mostly) silverware. Anyone with information can email pipingpress@gmail.com and we will pass on all information. The list:

MacDougall Gillies Medal –
Awarded with the John MacDougall Gillies Trophy at the Spring Juvenile/Amateur Competition which was last held in 1982. The Trophy, and presumably the medal, were returned in 1985 but the trophy went to RG Hardie’s for repair and they had it on show in their window for many years. It was returned to the SPA when the shop closed. The SPA was not aware that Hardie’s also had the medal but we now know from Hector Russell that it was in the shop in 1992. The detail on the medal, including the flap, mirrors the winners recorded on the trophy. The winner of the trophy only received it notionally and was given the medal to hold for the year plus a Peter Henderson medal to keep. The Henderson medal (below) was stopped on grounds of cost.

SPA Shield
– Spring Amateur/Juvenile Competition. Lost after 1982 (below).
Malcolm MacLean Currie Cup – Spring Juvenile/Amateur Competition. Lost after 1982. Last winner said he handed it back to a committee member in 1985 when the committee asked for all the April trophies to be returned.
Cameron and Chisholm Cups with lids

Cameron Cup – For the March at Autumn Amateur/Juvenile Competition. Lid for the cup lost sometime after 1958 when it appeared in a photograph with the lid.[wds id=”4″]
